Winter Solstice: Get Still To Know Your Next Steps
A solstice, in simple, simple terms, is a time of change. It is when the earth has its longest or shortest days of the year. In the winter, that is normally December 21. So the date announces the earth formally transitioning into winter. And, it signals a stillness. Time to be still.
The word solstice means, “the sun stands still.” And if this were true, if the brightest light in the universe stands still, it seems that humans should “stand still” too.
The winter always reminds me of snow, cold weather, and wearing layers of clothing to brace myself against the stiff, brisk winds. It is also a time to enjoy being snuggled up under blankets, sitting before a fireplace, and drinking a warm cup of something delicious.
It is a time to reflect. Especially if I imagine myself sitting in the lap of my Daddy God in a large-winged chair.
Sitting in Daddy’s lap lifts memories of comfort, safety, love, etc. If there is chatter coming from me, Daddy will surely respond with some wise, crisp words of wisdom in short, deliberate sentences. Instructions are involved. Words to prepare for a future are the content of Daddy God’s response.
Am I listening? You bet. Am I listening today? I intentionally craft and carve out space every winter to hear from Daddy God. And since winter lasts 89-94 days, there is time to be still, pray, meditate (listen), and receive the plan for this year’s holy tasks.
Are you listening? Are you spending time with God during this winter solstice? Are you still, and building your inner being for the road ahead?
Take time this winter. Be still and know that God has something to say.
Blessings.
